Mid-May Mash-up Showcase Friday May 27, 12 Noon!

63 students and their teachers emerge from a week underground!

Let's do it for them!

Our first Project L.E.A.P. Family Work Date is set for Thursday May 12 at 6:00 pm. Bring your work gloves and garden tools and help us prepare for phase 1 of this years' plan to improve our outdoor play and learning space. L.E.A.P. stands for Learn, Explore And Play, which pretty much describes what goes on outside at NSA on a day to day basis. We will weed, mulch, put down landscape cloth, install edging and a few other not so heavy labor tasks. We are in need of potting soil, large planters, rocks (head size) to use as borders. Got some Round-up laying around? We have some noxious curley dock that is threatening our pollinator garden and our Master Naturalist tells us that's pretty much the only way to keep it from taking over. We would also like to set our "jump stump" pathway set in the ground so bring your shovel if that sounds fun. We hope to see you there!

Calling all Gardeners and or Seed Enthusiasts!

It’s a sure sign of spring! It’s NSA’s Annual Seed Store fundraiser!

How does it work? We're so glad you asked!

  • We order non-GMO, untreated seeds in bulk from Fedco Seeds in Maine.
  • NSA kids create artwork for all the varieties to go on the seed packets.
  • NSA kids package the seeds in the artfully designed packets.
  • You choose your varieties and buy them from our delightful, young salespeople (or the office if they're busy learning.)
  • All that's left for lucky you to do is to plant, water - enjoy!

Come celebrate spring by taking the night off of food preparation! Bring the "Fam" and friends to Cafe Zupas in Woodbury for a delicious, healthy supper and help raise some "ching" for NSA's Project L.E.A.P. outdoor natural playspace. We're planning a sand and water learning and play area and pavers and plantings to go under our arbor. So, come and down!

We want your opinions!

Northern Clay Center Clay-to-Go program comes to NSA!

Starting the last week in February, the Northern Clay Center Clay Mobile will roll up to NSA and our students will have 6 hours of hands-on (of course!) instruction in taught by a NCC creamics artist. Northern Clay Center is a ceramic arts organization headquartered in Minneapolis.whose mission is, not surprisingly, advancement of ceramic arts. Northern Clay has done an artist-in-residence for NSA in the past and the kids loved it so we are thrilled to be able to bring them back again for NSA kids!

Calling all Worker bees! Project L.E.A.P. Workday August 6th!

Join us beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday August 6th to help us lay the beautiful pavers beneath the entrance arbor to NSA outdoor, classroom, playspace and gardens. This lovely walkway will wind from the arbor to the gardens and you can be a part of it! Bring gloves and your favorite shovel!

Another reason to love Fridays - Family Pizza Night at Borner Pizza Farm!

Let's do the math: Farm+Pizza+NSA Families and Friends=Fun!

Check out the Pollinate MN EdVenture Gallery!

Wow! What a trip! So many kids (and maybe a few adults) conquering their fear of bees and gaining new appreciation for this hard-working little creature that makes it possible for all of us to eat. It might be hard to tell who is who in those white suits but if you look hard you see someone you recognize. Either way, fun pictures of a fun day!

NSA Otters at Audubon Center of the North Woods!

The 4th and 5th grade Otters embarked on their yearly adventure to Audubon Center of North Woods  this week, for 3 days and nights of non-stop learning excitement. ACNW is an ELC (Environmental Learning Center) about 90 miles north of the Twin Cities and happens to be the Authorizer of our school. The "Big kids" of NSA take this trip each year. The Otters took part in classes taught by ACNW staff including Winter Survivor, Ojibway Hike, Team Challenge, Wildlife Signs, Orienteering, Raptors and so many things I can't even remember them all! They built shelters, learned to make a fire, use a compass and oh so much more. They enjoyed singing around a night-time campfire, learned about "Owling" and took a night time ice hike. Check out the Audubon Gallery to see pictures of the Otter's great adventure!

Crazy 8s kicks off with Glow in the Dark Geometry!

Staying after school has never been so much fun! CraZy 8s After-School Math Club started season 2 on Thursday November 19th. Classes talked about shapes and what kind of shapes can be used to make 3-D figures and how 3-D figures can be used to elevate the 2-D shapes skyward. Let the building begin! Styrofoam balls and glow sticks were joined to create 2-dimensional shapes which came together to form 3-dimensional prisms. Squares became cubes and triangles tranformed into pyramids. But that wasn't even the cool part! When the lights were switched off, the mathamatical creations came to life, looking like futuristic glowing cities. Stay tuned for more math fun after Thanksgiving. Don't forget to check out more pictures in the Crazy 8s Gallery!
