Katrina Nichols returns to the Natural Science Academy team as this year's 4th and 5th grade Otters teacher. She studied elementary education, environmental education, and science teaching at Northland College in Ashland, WI.  While a student at Northland, she spent summers working with kids outside--designing and executing environmental education programs in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin's Apostle Islands, and the Namekagon River.  She's a Wilderness First Responder, which came in handy when she was guiding canoe trips for teenagers in Northern Wisconsin.
In her spare time, Ms. Nichols likes to canoe, camp, hike, sing, read, and make things with her hands.  She loves to knit, crochet, and nalbind (the craft the Vikings used to make their mittens!)  At Northland, her participation in a place-based general education program called Superior Connections spawned a love of not only the Lake, but of place-based learning.
Most importantly, she loves children and the learning process and is so delighted to share it with NSA's Otters again this year!  Ms. Nichols has a strong sense of justice and believes that a fair and free world is one in which all children have the opportunity to have formative outdoor experiences.  For this reason, teaching at NSA is a dream come true.
